False Bay and Hangklip can be seen to the right in this magnificent painting. A schooner is beating out to sea while a Rennie's Direct Line Steamer can be seen rounding Cape Point. Methven might be making a commentary on the age of steam in this work.

Provenance: From the Nigel Hughes collection, previously the Hulett family collection.

Map of the West Coast of Africa c.1596

By Jan Huygen Van Linschoten (1571-1638) a Dutch spy, merchant, traveller and writer.

This striking map consists of South Africa, West Africa and parts of the Atlantic.The balance of the sheet is filled with fabulous cartouches, the Portuguese arms, elaborate compass roses, ships, and beasts. These details make this perhaps the most spectacular map of the region published in the sixteenth century. (Norwich, O.I. #239a; MCC 29 (Tooley #167).

Freeland was recognised as one of the top architects in Johannesburg in his time. He studied and worked in the U.K. and was, up until his death, the oldest resident of Upper Houghton.
